Kindle Paperwhite (2024) Review: The E-Reader Most People Should Buy

If you read more than a handful of books a year, a dedicated e-reader beats a phone, and the 2024 Paperwhite is the sweet spot of Amazon's lineup. It's quick, comfortable and blissfully free of distractions.

Key features

• The larger, snappier screen fixes the slight sluggishness older Kindles were known for.
• Warm light makes bedtime reading easier on the eyes, with no glare in the sun.
• It's waterproof, so the bath, pool or beach is fair game.
• Weeks of battery life means you'll rarely think about charging it.

Best for

Regular readers, commuters and travelers who want a comfortable, focused reading device.

Things to consider

• The standard version shows lock-screen ads unless you pay to remove them, a perennial gripe.
• You're locked into Amazon's store; library and outside ebooks take extra steps.
• Skip it if you mostly read comics in color or want a note-taking device; that's a different kind of product.

Verdict

The best all-around Kindle for most readers and an easy recommendation.
